Nathaniel Rateliff live at Limelight Belfast June 2012

Nathaniel Rateliff Limelight Belfast June 2012 Gig PosterAhead of a show at Mumford & Sons’ Gentlemen of the Road Festival in Salthill, Galway, Nathaniel Rateliff will be returning to Belfast with his band to play at the Limelight. We last saw Nathaniel just after his debut Later…with Jools Holland, since then he’s been writing and recording for his follow up to 2011′s “In Memory of Loss”, as well as travelling from Austin to Boston in a convoy of VW Campervan’s on a Communion tour with Ben Howard, The Staves and Bears Den.

We’ve got history with Nathaniel Rateliff, it’s like an old time revival and with the dedicated following he’s garnered in Ireland, and in Belfast in particular, this show is set to sell out. Rateliff brings a sensitivity and raw beauty to his music that is echoed through each note he sings. An experience enhanced and brought further to life with his band in tow.

“…he’s got one of those voices, like Kurt Wagner’s, that is deep and rich and full of intimations of a life well (or wearily) lived, that also seems to wink and nod with every knowing croak and sigh” – The Guardian

http://nathanielrateliff.com/

Support will be from David C. Clements. His is an epic and heavenly alternative folk; a mix of upbeat and energetic country, swelling melodies and crescendos, and vocals touched with the ache of experience retelling tales that feel at once both insightful and familiar. Clements has rightly developed a reputation as one of the finest songwriters in Belfast. Check out his three mini-album downloads at http://davidcclements.bandcamp.com/.

London Communion June 2012

London Communion June 2012 Gig PosterJune is an exciting month for us with our Bushstock Festival starting the month off, and it just got even better with this line-up for our June club night.

Topping the bill we have the Newcastle band Shields who come down to give us a taste of their take on alternative pop – check out some of their tunes at facebook.com/behindshields. You may remember  the incredible Wolf Alice’s song ‘Wednesday’ from the Communion weekly mail out a few weeks ago which completely blew us away. We are excited to see them live. One of our favourite new singer-songwriters James Canty is sure to impress with his great knack for melodies and lyrics. Phillipe Nash has been compared to Bon Iver and Jose Gonzales with his gentle and beautiful songs. Our own signings Gabriel and the Hounds are back over from Brooklyn, their last Notting Hill show was very well received and if you missed it, then make sure you don’t miss him again. Oh Burgundy join us from Brussels with their dark melodic songs. And finally, opening the show is Nick Wallis, a singer songwriter with a very unique voice and guitar style.

Sunday, 3th June 2012 at the Notting Hills Arts Club, London

All that and loads more fun for only £7 or £8.50 on the door.

Tickets on sale now from here.

Brighton Communion May 2012

Brighton Communion May 2012 Gig PosterWe’ve got a rather special line up for the Brighton May clubnight! Thursday, 24th May at the Hope!

Beans On Toast www.beansontoastmusic.com
Beans on Toast definitely doesn’t take himself too seriously. Claiming all his songs ‘have the same chords’ and ‘sound like Billy Bragg’, his brand of alco-folk blends a dark wit with serious social and political satire based on a diverse range of subjects; cocaine, Tesco, London, gun crime, myspace, global warming and the Lake District to name but a few. He recently supported Frank Turner at the Wembley Arena, ending his set with a heroic crowd surf that saw him carried all the way to the back – surely a world record?

Louise & The Pins www.facebook.com/LouiseAndThePins
With her 50′s glamour looks and sultry voice there’s not a lot not to like about Louise Hull. Combine that with perfect folk / pop / rock ‘n’ roll inspired melodies and two harmonious backing singers – Bethan Gorman and Sara Templeman – then you have a perfect band: Louise & The Pins. These girls have been capturing a lot of attention recently and building up a number of live dates which other newcomers would kill for: supporting Laura Marling as well as a recent set at Glastonbury.

Holy Vessels www.facebook.com/holyvessels
Just like getting your summer festival tickets in the post on a grey drizzly April morning, the recent arrival of the first snippets of Holy Vessel’s upcoming new album have tickled us with both excitement and anticipation. An infectious mix of country, rock and Americana, the Brighton boys always get feet stomping.

Killing Fields On Ontario www.killingfieldsofontario.com
Killing Fields of Ontario are an Alternative Folk-Rock band based in London, Birmingham and Leeds. Since releasing their debut album, ‘The Shock of the Sparks’, they’ve supported some great acts including Broken Records, Sparrow and the Workshop and Teitur. We’ve been fans for a while now and are extremely excited to finally get them down to Brighton.
A blend of toe-tapping Americana, banjos, Chili Peppers guitars and country-inflected Jack White vocals” – Vibrations Magazine

Lori Campbell www.facebook.com/loricampbellsings
Last year Lori was lucky enough to play a few support shows for the lovely Ben Howard and to share stages with such amazingly talented people as Seasick Steve and Benjamin Francis Leftwich. She has taken her guitar and her songs about pigeons, rainbows, the English Riviera and suchlike everywhere from the cake counter at Larmer Tree Festival to the historical stages at Glastonbury. Lovely.
‘Girl, I like what you do..’ – Seasick Steve at Goldcoast Oceanfest 2011

£6 advance tickets for the show are available here!

Doors open at 7.30pm – hope to see you there!

New York Communion May 2012

New York Communion May 2012 Gig PosterSunday, 6th May 2012 at Public Assembly, NY

New Country Rehab
http://www.newcountryrehab.com/
Take Canada’s hottest fiddle player, a guitarist who evokes Tom Morello and Kevin Breit, a percussionist who grooves on sawblades as readily as he does cookie sheets mix together with one of the most versatile double bass players in Canada and you get NEW COUNTRY REHAB. With John Showman, James Robertson, Roman Tome’ and Ben Whiteley, the band’s unique OUTLAW INDIE COUNTRY sound channels Hank Williams Sr. as much as Arcade Fire to create exciting new music. Their debut, self-titled album released in Canada in Jan., 2011. Recorded by Roots and Indie – Rock producer Chris Stringer (Obijou and Timber – Timbre) NEW COUNTRY REHAB highlights the group’s original compositions and deep musical palette.

Christopher Paul Stelling
http://christopherpaulstelling.wordpress.com/
Christopher Paul Stelling arrived in NYC in 08′ with a guitar and a duffle bag. Not necessarily concerned with making a name for himself, circumstance and necessity soon found him singing and playing guitar on the subway platforms. The years prior had seen him through an odyssey. From studying under a master guitar builder in colorado, working a produce market in Boston, sleeping in a closet in North Carolina, managing a used bookstore in Florida, wandering aimlessly through Seattle, all without a said plan in mind, vaguely unaware that something was being stitched together beneath it all. Those New York subway platforms soon gave way to stages. Christopher has played many of New York’s stages including Rockwood Music Hall, Highline Ballroom, Lit Lounge, Pianos, The Living Room, Bowery Electric, Sidewalk Cafe, Glasslands, The Mercury Lounge, Bowery Ballroom, etc. He has opened for many acclaimed national acts and headlined many of his own shows. He has toured regionally and nationally.
His finger-style guitar playing comes off effortless, bringing to mind the likes of at times John Fahey and Sandy Bull and at other times that of Segovia. Christopher’s song writing reaches deep, spineward, with a lyrical styling reminiscent of anything from Dylan, to Faulkner or Walt Whitman.

Aunt Martha
http://www.auntmarthaband.com/
Aunt Martha is the creative vessel of New England based songwriter and vocalist Tim Noyes. The band has taken various shapes since its formation in 2008, all the while being propelled by the constant writing and touring that has become Noyesʼ trademark. 2011 was their busiest year yet, with over 150 shows played and five released recordings (2 EPs, 1 full length, 1 album of cover songs and 1 single). The touring brought them all over the U.S. with stops at more than a few well known music festivals including Bonnaroo and Orlando Calling, along with opening appearances for the likes of Deer Tick, Blind Pilot, Matisyahu and many others. Like the band itself, the music tends to fluctuate. Sometimes itʼs quiet and sentimental, stripped down to nothing more than acoustic guitar and vocals. At other times, particularly on the most recent full length album Norway, ME, it becomes a lush wall of sound filled by layered vocal loops, electric guitars, makeshift percussion and synthesizers. To kick off 2012 the band has released La La Lonesome, an EP of 5 simple acoustic songs. It was recorded in a series of motel rooms while on tour in December of 2011.

The Dead Exs
http://thedeadexs.com/
At the crossroads of East Houston and 2nd Avenue in NYC, The Dead Exs summon the gods of Blues and Rock & Roll recording LIVE in the studio with dp (David Pattillo) on electric slide guitar and vocals and Wylie Wirth on the skins. In July 2011, The Dead Exs were voted “NYC Artist of The Month” by The Deli Magazine. In just a year the band has released a full length debut, opened shows for The Del Fuegos renuion tour, generated buzz from blogs, been licensed by several skate and surf brands, been featured at John Varvatos Thursday Night Live in NYC, and received thousands of views on Youtube. Their single “More Stuff” is charted Top 5 on Twitter.

Kat Edmonson
http://www.katedmonson.com/
Kat Edmonson’s sophomore album Way Down Low is out now onSpinnerette Records. The native Texan makes not only her songwriting debut on the record but also co-produces the album. Edmonson duets with Lyle Lovett on the title track “Long Way Home” which Entertainment Weekly calls “an airy country duet.” The album was recorded at the historic Avatar Studio and Capitol Studios with Grammy-winning producer/engineer Al Schmitt (Ray Charles, Frank Sinatra, Sam Cooke) and producer/bassist Danton Boller. The sessions also included input from producer Phil Ramone (Paul Simon “Still Crazy After All These Years,” Billy Joel “The Stranger”).
