Communion Guest DJ Playlist: Adam French

This month’s guest DJ is Adam French, a 22 year-old, singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist hailing from the North West of England. Having played the BBC Introducing stage at Reading & Leeds last summer, supported numerous big names including Frances and Jack Garratt, and just wrapped his own UK headline tour, Adam is set for a busy 2016 and will be joining Communion’s New Faces tour in April as a seasoned live performer. Buy ticket here.

Amid the hustle and bustle of a musician’s busy schedule, we invited Adam to take to the decks (/Spotify playlist) to share and explain how some of his most favourite tunes have influenced and inspired his life and songwriting to date.

Bon Iver - Blood Bank
This was the first Bon Iver track I’d ever heard when a friend introduced me to it. Justin Vernon is one of the finest contributors to music as far as I’m concerned. Genius.

Billie Marten - Bird
Billie’s a young artist I first discovered when we both played the BBC introducing stages @ Reading & Leeds festivals. Bird was produced by Rich Cooper, Great guy and a phenomenal talent… I think it’s one of the best put together records of recent years. So tasteful and completely beautiful.

The Subways - Strawberry Blonde
The Subways were one of my favourite bands as a teenager, the first 45 seconds of this are what gets me, such honest emotional melody and lyrics. I like a lot.

Iggy Pop - The Passenger
I don’t really need to explain why this is on here… Who doesn’t like ‘The Passenger’ ?! - This one was introduced to me by my old man when I was about 12.

Strange Bones - God Save The Teen
This is my mate Rob’s band. They’re stupidly good. Straight up guitar rock. They recorded this with Chris from Foo Fighters, its massive. Go check them out live.

Gold Panda - In My Car
I remember first hearing ‘You’ and falling a little bit in love with Gold Panda… heard this the other day and thought it deserved a spot on the playlist.

Wolfmother - Joker and the Thief
Probably one of the biggest riffs in modern guitar music… All sorts of references come through in this track but you can’t deny it. It’s good.

The Cribs - Our Bovine Public
I first discovered The Cribs when I saw them supporting The Sex Pistols at Brixton Academy when I was about 15… I still think one of the best indie bands to come out of Britain, ever.

Queens of The Stone Age - Go With The Flow

Josh Homme is one of my idols, such an understanding of what makes a record special. I grew up listening to ‘Songs for the deaf’ as a delusional teenager telling myself that someday I’d be a musician, artist, producer. Such a massive song.

The Hives - Hate to Say I Told You So
Again, a track from my teenage years. I saw The Hives perform this at Leeds festival like 6 years ago, this song doesn’t get old.

The Raconteurs - Steady As She Goes
Pretty much everything Jack white touches turns to gold, this is probably my favourite of his musical offerings.

The Black Keys - Lonely Boy
Just an absolute anthem. Such a great feeling record.

Band Of Skulls - Bruises
Again, a band I discovered on the festival circuit as a teenager. Nice nice nice.

Tokyo Police Club - Favourite Colour
This album was the soundtrack to every car journey for me and my mates for probably for about a year. We loved it, I think they deserve to be bigger, this record was and still is absolutely amazing.
