Glasgow Communion September 2011
September’s Glasgow Communion Show brings two heavy weights from opposite ends of the country together to provide a double headliner showcase with Woodenbox with a Fistful of Fivers and Treetop Flyers.
Glasgow’s own Woodenbox with a Fistful of Fivers:
What makes a good band name? Well, according to Ali Downer of the splendidly-named central Scotland country-rock collective Woodenbox with a Fistful of Fivers, it’s the opportunity to annoy the naysayers.
Downer and his bandmates Nick Dudman (drums/ukelele), Fraser McKirdy (bass/organ), Phil Cardwell (trumpet), Jordan Croan (electric guitar) and Sam Evans (sax) have gone from strength to strength and have built up a reputation for their raucous live shows since getting together at the beginning of 2008.
The band’s two-piece brass section is among the many things that set them apart from many bands in the local scene. “Ultimately we want to create something different,” Downer explains.
and Treetop Flyers:
TF released a single on Communion Records earlier this year and they also performed a stroming set at Glastonbury on The Other Stage, big things expected of these guys from head office in London and we are very excited about having them in Glasgow
At the end of 2008 and with clearer ideas of where they wanted to be musically, drummer Tomer Danan (previously New York band Robbers On High Street) and lead singer Reid Morrison closed the curtains on their four piece Morrison Steam Fayre to concentrate on realising their ideals for a band. Joining forces with London solo artist Sam Beer and guitarist Laurie Sherman (The Barker Band, Scorpion Face) they played Hoxton Bar and Kitchen with Treetop Flyers as a tentative name. After the gig Matthew Starritt (previously with Rum Shebeen) was recruited on bass guitar enabling Treetop Flyers to take full flight.
Keen to record their plethora of songs in an analogue studio in a manner befitting their raw, live sound the band were fortunate enough to lay down several tracks with engineer Simon Trought at Soup Studios in the basement of The Duke of Uke, East London. Simon proved to be an intuitive collaborator in the production of the recordings and introduced Paul Rains (Hexicon), on lap steel to tracks ‘Mountain Song’ and ‘Old Days’.
