Communion Cornwall – April 2011
After a successful launch at B-Side Bunters in Truro at the end of March club night Communion returns to its Cornish residence at Bunters Truro on Friday 29 April with an excitingly eclectic line up of some great live bands from around the country.
Headlining the night will be a band that are no strangers to Cornwall having played a small number of highly successful shows here in the past and picking up an army of Cornish followers along the way; Swedish indie pop sensation Pippa Marias.
Described as sounding like The Cure, Hot Chip and Phoenix but with a twist of French dance pop (but with more of an edge) PM are a band that are starting to make serious waves and in recent times have headlined Club NME at Koko in Camden, shared stages with the likes of Mark Ronson, I Blame Coco, Pendulum and many others. Managed by Andy Ross (the man who signed Blur) this Gothenburg-bred, Dalston based quartet have already hit the top 20 charting on radio play in Sweden and been named Myspace band of the month.
Taking their name from a British film about the English Civil War, Leeds natives To Kill A King wear their emotions heavily upon their shirt sleeves. To Kill A King wanted to make music that mattered. Citing literary greats such as Dylan Thomas, the NYC beat-poet era of Allen Ginsberg and musical reference points such as Grizzly Bear and Mystery Jets they place equal emphasis on both melody and lyrics.
Discovered by the ever blossoming Communion label, To Kill A King have been honing their live show at Communion club nights across the country, and with debut single ‘Fictional State’ and its vastness of multi tracked, guitar heavy sound, Communion looks set to launch yet another very exciting new British act.
New Brighton band Holland takes dream like vocals and layers them over driving rhythms, layered guitars and delicate synths to form a new yet somehow familiar listening experience. Lead by ex Sycamores singer Jason White it’s hard to place their sound specifically but we find them sitting somewhere between Alt. Indie often found on the other side of the Atlantic and 90’s shoe gaze while retaining an understated sensibility in their lyric writing and structures.
Opening the show Cardiff’s Among Brothers are a 6 piece band that fuses electronic rhythms, theatrical chants and percussive flourishes to create vibrant pop-influenced arrangements anchored by narrative themes. Just confirmed to play the Radio 1 Big Weekend make sure you don’t miss them opening the show at Communion Cornwall!
