Communion NYC 3rd of April
LIVE:
Theo Martins
www.myspace.com/theomartins
This Providence-native has been making a rather large splash on the independent music scene. Last month, the rapper/singer released Sincerely Yours, The Dance Floor, a free 10-track EP that found him exploring a multi-genre dance sound incorporating elements of hip-hop, indie rock, pop, electro, dubstep and funk.A high energy performer who’s applauded for his cross-genre appeal, the Nigerian-American has been fawned over by the urban press for bringing something truly new and unique to hip-hop audiences. XXL magazine’s Deputy Editor Rob Markman says “Theo marches to the beat of his own drum.” The coming months will find him performing spot dates both nationally and abroad.
Arrah and the Ferns

AATF span the pop spectrum from the Beatles to Burt Bacharach to the B-52′s with their campy combination of cheerfully up-beat keyboards, crisp electric guitars and 50′s style swing rhythms…The perfect blend of ear-pleasing pop hooks and kitschy lounge lizard throwbacks are offset by grunge-tastic guitar solos and a distinct sound that ranges from organic folk to post-studio pop. Their catchy sing-along chorus hooks are paired with unpretentiously ironic and tongue-in-cheek lyrics, resulting in a guilt-free pop listening experience equally suited to chilling out solo or cutting a rug with some chums. bex0r.worldpress.org
Josh Joplin
www.myspace.com/joshjoplins
Josh Joplin’s song “Blue Skies Again” is featured on Jessica Lea Mayfield’s new record “Tell Me”. Pitchfork called it “simple, infectious” and “a stand out!”. He is the founding member of Among The Oak & Ash a collective of rock, bluegrass, and folk musicians that “provide a much needed kick in the pants to a genre that all too often becomes a ‘Kumbaya’ punchline” according to Vanity Fair and Time Out New York describes as offering a “lush revisitation of murder ballads”. They’ll be releasing their 2nd record in the Spring of 2011. Joplin lives in New York City.
Early Winters
www.myspace.com/earlywinters
Comprised of acclaimed UK singer Carina Round, Juno nominated Canadian artist Justin Rutledge, L.A. producer/musician Dan Burns and Zac Rae (Pedestrian), released their self-titled debut 7″ and five-song digital EP on March 8th. Musically rootsy yet geographically rootless, the quartet began writing their debut EP and forthcoming album over email and Skype while they were scattered around the world working on other projects in four different countries. The final result is a well-traveled package.
The Hollows
www.myspace.com/thehollows
The Hollows are a folk-rock/indie-rock freewheeling hootenanny of a band. The sound is a contemporary and edgy spin on Americana and roots music with modern influences mixed in for a truly unique experience. All members write and arrange material, creating a diverse blend of acoustic and electric styles as banjo, mandolin, guitars, basses, keyboards, harmonicas, accordions, and more get traded and swapped in a live show that is both refreshingly original and distinctly classic. They recently recorded their debut album at The Clubhouse in Rhinebeck, New York, and are preparing it for release later this spring.
Alfonso Velez
www.myspace.com/alfonsovelez
Heartbreak, romance and elegance. Those are the tools of New York-based singer songwriter Alfonso Velez To listen to his new self-titled record is to hear a number of influences mixing into one. There’s a Paul Simon softness and love of phrase, like in the gorgeous “Barcelona Birds”: “Barcelona birds are flying overhead / Cutting through the hues of blues, yellows and the reds … / I’ve been following the streets, the long and winding streets / Where shadows dance on walls, and women play in sheets.” Songwriting doesn’t get much stronger than that. theirbatedbreath.worldpress.com
