COMMUNION LAUNCHES IN BROOKLYN IN 2011

So we made it over the Irish Sea, and some how we made it down under, but we can proudly present to you our latest adventure. Across the proverbial pond, we are landing in New York City in 2011. Having found the perfect home in the form of Public Assembly, we set to work on bringing a bit of good ol’ British hospitality to the states, and open our doors on January 9th.

We’ve hand-picked this line-up for you and deliberated over it for many weeks. We love every act. Here are their details and few words other people have said about them:

LIVE:

Alex Winston

“So many of pop’s roads lead back to Motown and if you were to take a meandering wander down the rich musical heritage of Detroit you will find at the end of the lane a man named Berry Gordy – no doubt sat there tapping his feet and clicking a finger at you. He masterminded that important period in 60s pop music and perfected the art of creating songs that did something very rare – each one was instantly enjoyable, but utterly timeless. All of it sprinkled in sugar, but also rather perfect in its solid construction. The ripples of this period have affected so much since, but Alex Winston specifically marks it all as a direct inspiration and there’s no denying that the same genetic notes of Motown are easily located within her music. Even though she’s also a branch from the same musical tree from which Regina Spector blossomed, it should come as no shock to hear that she called Detroit home during her childhood. She’s a multi-instrumentalist, having initially had a guitar given to her by her father at just 7 years old, but going on to also record the piano and even the drums on [her latest] covers EP. Her original work is what will deservedly earn her the real plaudits however, such as her double A-side single, Choice Notes, with the track, Medicine, on the reverse. She’s baked the perfect pop cake with both songs, of the kind you can taste on your tongue for hours afterwards. Be warned – it’s very morish too, with her cute vocals shining throughout and the tambourine beats, all played with a childish smile. It’s like Regine Chassagne, from Arcade Fire, making an appearance on Sesame Street. We expect Feist is shaking in her little fur-lined boots, but to be honest this music aims much higher, has more soul and the variety of edge located within it gives it way more depth.” therecommender.net

Adele’s “favourite new artist”.
“Seamlessly blends soul and R&B warmth with masterclass-level classical leanings and an incredible ability to craft heart-rending songs that soar and dip like melancholic birds of prey. Move over, John Legend.” guardian.co.uk

Pearl and The Beard
www.myspace.com/pearlandthebeard

“Pearl and The Beard make dynamic, sweeping, irresistible folk music, cut with a theatrical flair and rich with absolutely lovely vocal interplay among the band’s three outstanding vocalists”. comfortradio.org

Bobby Long

www.myspace.com/bobbylong

“Picture yourself in a dark coffeehouse. Tom Waites is the barista, and Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan are in a back corner taking nips of absinthe when nobody is looking.

The music you hear in this imagined environment is Bobby Long’s, the young man on the stage with the mic and acoustic guitar. There’s an essence of the protest song in his tunes, a certainty that there’s a gravitas in the dense and obtuse lyrics, and you nod affirmation as you sip your coffee (unless Bob and Lenny have passed you some of their nectar) while the notes wash over you.
Here’s the thing with Bobby Long’s “Dirty Pond Songs” — they’re musical poems, not stories, and the more you try to make sense of what’s actually being said, the more your head hurts.” the-trades.com

As an emerging filmmaker, Sean Glass is making an impression. A strong New York personality, and socialite, and also one of the nicest people we’ve met. Watch this space.

The Knocks
www.myspace.com/itstheknocks

Based out of the Lower East Side of Manhattan, the Knocks are emerging as a force to be reckoned with as far as music production is concerned. Consisting of Ben “DJ B-Roc” Ruttner and James “JPatt” Patterson, the Knocks are named in reference to the early days of their production career when they worked out of their home studios. Their complaining neighbors would pound on the walls and ceilings. Two years later, they have upgraded to the Heavy Roc Music studio in Chinatown and are making names for themselves finding and developing talent as well as remixing the likes of major artists.
