CD (COMMUNION RECORDS) – RELEASED DECEMBER 13TH
London-born songwriter Ned Younger first assembled some of the first Monument Valley songs whilst living abroad in Spain. Having spent his whole life writing songs, Ned returned to his hometown with a determination to work his endless pages of lyrics detailing everything from found market photographs to the weeks he spent in a Madrid hospital recovering from a collapsed lung (“No Air”) into a fully fledged musical project, titled Monument Valley.
After early demos found their way to the Communion label Monument Valley recorded the 3 track “No Air EP” with Ian Grimble towards the end of the summer, with horn section scores by Jeremy Warmsley (Summer Camp) and Paul Frith (Sufjan Stevens, Broken Social Scene) on standout track “B of the Bang”, and backing by musicians including the Mumford and Sons horn section and classical cellist Gregor Riddell.
With echoes of The Decemberists, Nick Drake and an adolescence listening to the indie-pop of Moldy Peaches, Belle and Sebastian and Galaxie 500, the “No Air EP” introduces an exceptional talent and songwriter to the world, one with both originality and a lyrical ability to clearly mark him out from the off. Younger is joined live backed by cello whilst playing guitar, and it’s in the hushed live settings of an attentive crowd where his narrative journeys of songs come into their own.
