Oxford Communion March 2012

Oxford Communion March 2012 Gig PosterCommunion Oxford is back at the Jericho Tavern on Monday 5th March!

We’re excited to present a night of musical discovery, community and general loveliness, with hidden gems from the Oxford music scene and artists about to break nationally.
March’s line up is:

Boat To Row
Folk collective Boat to Row combine nimble guitar melodies with a rich set of boy-girl harmonies, tripping glockenspiel, swooning violin and ricocheting drum beat.

Megan Henwood
Winner of the BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Award in 2009 with her brother, Megan’s music weaves powerful, poignant and often witty lyrics around wonderful timeless pop melodies.

Goodnight Lenin
Inspired by Dylan, Young and Simon & Garfunkel, Goodnight Lenin’s songs are reminiscent of the singer songwriters of the 1960s & 1970s, whilst still being relevant to the modern day listener.

Bobbie Gordon
Bobbie Gordon could just be the next big thing to come out of the UK. She’s already performed with Adele, Noisettes, Cee-Lo Gren, Kele and Skepta.

Gibraltar
Gibraltar is a young group of Oxford-based musicians who combine searing ability with a showmanship far beyond their years.

Doors: 7.30pm

Dublin Communion March 2012

Dublin Communion March 2012 Gig PosterDublin Communion returns to Academy 2 on 31st March 2012

Hudson Taylor began life as youngsters Harry & Alfie growing up in Ireland.  The naturally musical lads bought a cheap guitar and started singing covers at parties to friends and party revellers.  They were soon receiving requests from a growing fan-base so started to upload videos onto Youtube of themselves singing and playing.  With each new video their popularity grew further still, regularly receiving 5,000 hits per video every day.

Since then, their talent, energy and unique ability to connect with a crowd has thrust them firmly into the limelight.  They’ve taken themselves all over Ireland, often attracting like-minded musicians, busking to crowds that would grow from a handful to literally hundreds of people.  This natural progression led them to recruiting more band members, and evolving into the fuller band arrangement that is Hudson Taylor.

Hudson Taylor, it is fair to say, have created quite a buzz since moving to their original motherland of London town.  They’ve continued to write and work with a whole host of producers and musicians that have helped shape their sound and are currently fielding interest from major label scouts.

More acts to be announced soon!

Patrick Watson at St Stephens Church April 2012

Patrick Watson St Stephens Church April 2012 Gig PosterCommunion are proud to present Patrick Watson live at St Stephens Church on April 30th!

Patrick Watson first broke through to audiences in 2006 with his album Close to Paradise. The album went gold in Canada and won numerous awards, including the Polaris Prize. It saw international release in September 2007 and has since sold over 100,000 copies worldwide. Watson also began to receive attention around the same time for his song “To Build a Home,” which he performs with Cinematic Orchestra on their 2007 album, Ma Fleur.
His 2009 album, Wooden Arms, saw the band expand in the live setting to include a string quartet—not surprisingly, considering the lush arrangements present on all the albums.

Watson’s latest offering, entitled Adventures in Your Own Backyard, is in his own words, an effort on the band’s part to “make the kind of music we would want to listen to at home.” The album’s title is both a nod to this sentiment, and to the fact that it was recorded almost entirely in Watson’s apartment in Montreal. Both Close to Paradise and Wooden Arms were recorded over long periods of time, in many different places—Wooden Arms is especially scattered in its geography, with a number of the songs having been informed by the band’s extensive travels in the wake of the success of Close to Paradise.

Tickets for Patrick’s headline show are available at £14 advance here

London Communion March 2012

London Communion March 2012 Gig PosterSo it’s almost March! The days are getting longer and lighter, and the Communion line-ups are getting better and better. Starting up the night we have charming Dutch singer songwriter Christof, followed by the husky voice and heartfelt love songs of Josh Kumra. Willis Earl Beal has been turning heads everywhere he plays, his voice is big and bluesy and the production as minimal as it gets. Guaranteed to be pretty captivating. Signed to Communion records, we are delighted to welcome Gabriel and the Hounds over from Brooklyn. We love this record and can’t wait for his performance at the Arts Club. Next up fresh from Liverpool, Loved Ones, whose electronic influenced indie has made them ones to watch. Ellen and the Escapades pop down from Leeds ahead of the release of their debut album ‘All the Crooked Scenes’. Constantly impressing audiences with their live shows and Ellen Smiths remarkably soothing voice. Finishing the night off are Duologue whose dark indie mixed with electro beats and violin flourishes is something not to be missed!

Dublin Communion February 2012

Dublin Communion February 2012 Gig PosterDUBLIN COMMUNION – SUNDAY FEB 26th at ACADEMY 2

Leaders of Men play our Dublin show on Sunday February 26th and we are bloody excited about it. They’re causing a bit of a fuss in Ireland at the minute and when somebody causes a fuss, we want to be part of it. Basically. www.leadersofmen.ie

Rae Morris is slamming so many Communion shows over the next few months we thought it’d be rude not to invite her to Dublin. Stunning voice. Just signed to Atlantic Records too. Fancy that! www.raemorris.co.uk

David C. Clements is the beauty we all know from Belfast. He impressed the pants of everyone at Communion in January 2011 along with his friends The Lowly Knights, who we adore. Delighted to have him on the bill again. Impressive new tunes here which he released not too long ago. davidcclements.bandcamp.com

Hailing from Brooklyn, Gabriel Levine, best known as founding member and singer in Takka Takka has just released his debut ‘Kiss Full of Teeth’ under the moniker Gabriel and The Hounds. We’re guessing this has something to do with his imaginary dogs Nummo and Look-loo? This makes us happy. gabrielandthehounds.com

Dublin has been getting particularly excited about Little xs for Eyes over the last year. Now it is time for them to grace us with their presence and show Communion what they’re made off. We’re ready. littlexsforeyes.bandcamp.com

Ross Breen will open the show. Or will he? We might decide to mix up the line up so this means you need to arrive at 7.15pm to catch all of our acts. We are so innovative aren’t we? A sort of Kinder Egg of a gig if you will. www.rossbreen.com

Brighton Communion February 2012

Brighton Communion February 2012 Gig PosterBrighton Communion returns to the Hope on Thursday, 23 February 2012!

KYLA LA GRANGE
Described by US Vogue as ‘heart-swelling’, and by US blog Neon Gold as ‘visceral knockouts with no pulled punches in sight’, Kyla’s sound is beautifully showcased in ‘Heavy Stone’ and ‘Lambs’. Each delivers epic folk-pop symphonies as Kyla flexes a musical talent that has drawn comparisons to Marianne Faithfull and Stevie Nicks, with a lyrical deftness that pulls the listener in.
“one of those precocious talents that everyone secretly fears. A gorgeous voice and a soaring chorus, the kind that makes your heart swell a little bit. Stirring stuff.”- The Guardian

NATIVE ROSES
Formed by the founding members of Modern Fighting Vehicles, Native Roses has swelled its ranks with such darlings as Jessica and Jasmine (aka Birdy), who has subsequently landed a great solo recording contract with Atlantic. They’ve released a four track EP this year and are cutting a record with some old school players including a former member of Roxy music.

GABRIEL & THE HOUNDS
Brooklyn artist, Gabriel Levine, best know as founding member and singer in Takka Takka is set to release his debut, Kiss Full of Teeth under the moniker, Gabriel and the Hounds. The various musicians who came together to record this album include performers who are in or have recorded with: The National, Beirut, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Sufjan Stevens, Pat Jordache, Tune-Yards, Bjork, Jonsi, and St Vincent.

PAUL DIELLO
“Paul Diello – has been compared to Eddie Izzard and Anthony and The Johnsons, that gives you a rough compass direction but Paul is actually entirely unique. He posses a stunning vocal and song writing talent that has brought him a whole raft of fans many of whom have fallen in love with him via his self released debut album “The Last Green Bottle’. Hear his contribution to the SolarAid Compilation, you will not be disappointed” Eugenie Arrowsmith – THE BIG CHILL
